Lacerations. Two infected laceration on the leg of a seventy year-old woman, possibly made by a sharp object. The skin has peeled back from both cuts. Blood and yellow pus can be seen in the wounds and inflammation is visible in the surrounding tissue. Thinner and inelastic skin in elderly people makes such lacerations more likely, slower to heal, and increases the chance of infection. Such wounds should therefore be thoroughly cleansed of infection, stitched to close the skin and covered with a dressing. Lacerations made with a sharp object usually heal quickly and cause minimal scarring. Antibiotics may be given to prevent bacterial infection | |
