Pinned broken arm. Coloured X-ray showing steel pins immobilising a compound fracture of radius and ulna lower arm bones. Bone appears pink. Steel plates (blue) are inserted against the fractured bones and screwed in place with pins. In this case the broken ends of bone separated and could have pierced the skin. The radius is the larger bone at right, aligned with the thumb of the hand (at lower frame). The smaller ulna is at left. Most fractures are due to sudden injury. They require immobilization to align the bone so that the ends can knit together and heal properly. (See photo M330/553 showing the fracture before pinning) | |
