Laceration and haematoma. A long laceration on the leg of a 70-year-old woman. The skin has peeled back from the cut and blood has collected in the surrounding tissue (haematoma). Skin is thinner and less elastic in the elderly, making laceration more likely. Healing is also slower and the chance of infection higher. Wounds like this are cleaned to remove germs, stitched and dressed. Lacerations made with a sharp object usually heal quickly and cause minimal scarring. Antibiotics may be given to prevent bacterial infection | |
