Broken forearm. View of a bruised arm due to a fracture of the distal radius (large bone of the forearm) in a woman aged 70. Bleeding from damaged blood capillaries has occurred under the skin to produce this bruising. Most fractures are caused by a sudden injury that exerts more force on the bone than it can withstand. Post-menopausal and elderly women are more susceptible to bone fractures due to brittle bone disease (osteo- porosis). Treatment of a broken arm includes re- alignment of the bone ends if these have separated, immobilization by a splint or steel pins, followed by rest | |
