Angioedema. Severe swelling in the lower face of a 50- year-old man,caused by angioedema. This is an allergic reaction in which sudden swellings occur in the soft tissue around the mouth,larynx and other areas. Causes include certain foods (such as eggs,strawberries and seafood),drugs (such as penicillin),insect bites,infection,emotional stress and pollen. It mostly affects young people in their 20s and those with a tendency towards allergies. Angioedema can cause difficulty with speaking and breathing,potentially blocking the windpipe and causing suffocation. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs | |
