Insect bite rash. Close-up of a pink rash on a patient's arm following an insect bite. Insect bites are made by blood-sucking insects such as gnats, mosquitos, and cat or dog fleas. The skin reaction is primarily an allergic response to substances in the insect's saliva or faeces (which may be deposited near the bite and then rubbed in by scratching). Reactions vary from person to person, even to the same biting species. In some cases the reaction can be extremely severe, even fatal if the bite is from a stinging insect. The affected area should be thoroughly washed and scratching avoided. Antihistamine drugs may be given to reduce severe allergic reactions | |
