MODEL RELEASED. Allergy testing. A boy holds out his arm during a skin prick test for allergies. The hand of a nurse is about to prick the skin where a drop of soluble allergen (allergic substance) has been placed. Various allergens such as pollen, dust, fungal spores, may be tested this way along different points of the arm. Any skin inflammation indicates an immune response, showing the patient may be allergic to that particular substance. Skin prick tests help to identify allergens responsible for conditions like asthma or allergic rhinitis (hay fever). A treatment may thus be prescribed.
