MODEL RELEASED. Necrotic ulcer on the foot of a 74 year old diabetic man. An ulcer is an open sore that does not heal. If it persists the area may become necrotic (dark central area),in which the tissue dies. Ulceration is very common in diabetic people,as the condition can lead to neuropathy (nerve damage) and peripheral vascular disease, which are both risk factors for the development of ulcers. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body either stops producing or becomes resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin. This regulates the uptake of sugars from the blood,so low levels lead to high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) | |
