Diabetic ulcer. Close-up of the heel of a diabetic patient showing an ulcer. This "heelsore" has partly scabbed over. Skin ulcers occurring on the leg of a diabetic patient are usually due to in- adequate blood supply to,or drainage from, the limb. Incidence of atherosclerosis (obstructive arterial disease) is higher in diabetic patients. A poor blood supply may additionally slow the healing of an ulcer. Ulcers may also result from neuropathy,an abnormality of the peripheral nerve system that occurs in diabetes. In neuropathy the foot becomes insensitive and is prone to tissue damage and then ulceration, while the patient is often unaware that damage has occurred | |
