Clinical photograph showing an ulcer on the foot of a diabetic patient. The ulcer is due to neuropathy,an abnormality of the peripheral nerves that occurs in diabetes. Such an insensitive foot is prone to tissue damage & ulceration, because the patient is often unaware that damage has occured. In diabetes, neuropathy may be accompanied by atherosclerosis (obstructive arterial disease),which reduces blood flow to the affected leg, increasing the chance of injury & having an adverse influence on the healing process.
