Liver tuberculosis. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the liver of a patient with miliary tuberculosis (TB). A tubercle,a nodular lesion of infected dead tissue,is seen at left. The purple cells at the edge of the tubercle are lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Within the tubercle are epithelioid cells (also purple) and multinucleate giant cells (solid pink). Miliary TB is a chronic form of TB where Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria spread from the infected lungs to other organs. If untreated, this type of TB is fatal. Treatment involves a long course of several antibiotics | |
