Eye in thyrotoxicosis. Side view of the bulging eye (exophthalmos) of a person suffering from thyrotoxicosis. Bulging eye is due to swelling of the soft tissue in the eye socket, causing the eyeball to be pushed forwards, forcing the eyelids apart and creating a staring appearance. Thyro- toxicosis (overactive thyroid gland) is the most common cause, although the symptom is also found in Graves' disease. Other causes of bulging eye include eye inflammation,an aneurysm (swollen artery) in the eye,or a tumour. The effect may be double vision,& the eye's movement or blood supply may be restricted. Treatment of an over- active thyroid involves drugs & sometimes surgery | |
