Example of tinea, also known as ringworm,on the arm of a sheepworker. The disease was picked up from an infected sheep. Tinea is a fungal infection of the surface of the skin and is caused by various species such as Microsporum,Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. Ringworm, which also affects animals,is highly contagious and can be spread by direct contact or via infected materials. The commonest form of ringworm is tinea pedis, also known as athlete's foot, which affects the skin between the toes. The infection causes intense itching and is generally treated with antifungal agents taken by mouth or applied locally | |
