Sinusitis. X-ray of a patient's skull showing areas of inflammation due to acute sinusitis. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane-lined air spaces in the bones of the face. In this patient, the frontal sinus (in the forehead between the eyes),the maxillary sinuses (in the cheeks),and the ethmoid air cells (in the upper part of the nose) are affected. Sinusitis is often caused by an infection that has spread from the nose. Symptoms include headaches and tenderness over the affected sinuses, which may fill with pus. Treatment is with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs,or by draining to remove the fluid and relieve pressure in the sinuses | |
