Raynaud's phenomenon. The hand of a 35 year-old woman whose fingers have discoloured due to Raynaud's phenomenon. Raynaud's phenomenon is a circulatory disorder affecting the fingers and the toes. Whitening of the fingers is triggered by exposure to the cold or emotional disturbances which cause constriction of blood vessels in the fingers. As the hands warm up,the fingers turn blue and then red, before returning to normal. This condition results from an underlying disorder, such as vascular disease,or from occupational injury to the hands (for example, caused by vibrating machinery or excessive typing) | |
