Porocephaliasis. Coloured urograph (X-ray) of the abdomen of a patient suffering from porocephaliasis. Nymphs of the parasitic arthropod Porocephalus sp. (pink) can be seen in the urinary tract. As adults, these parasites are usually found in the lungs of snakes in tropical Africa and India. Very occasionally,Porocephalus sp. eggs are ingested by humans in contaminated water and food. After hatching in the gut,the larvae burrow through the gut wall and migrate to other areas of the body, including the lungs and liver, where they develop into nymphs. The presence of the nymphs does not usually cause symptoms in humans | |
