MODEL RELEASED. Facial paralysis. Paralysis (palsy) of one side of the face in a 50-year-old man. The side of the face at left of frame is affected. The eyelid and the corner of the mouth have drooped. The eye on the paralysed side is weeping as control of lacrimation (tear production) has been lost. Facial paralysis occurs when the facial nerve has been damaged or squeezed. In this case the nerve was damaged when surgeons removed an acoustic neuroma (a benign cranial nerve tumour). Analgesic drugs are usually given to ease pain associated with facial paralysis. Exercising the facial muscles can aid recovery in some cases | |
