Scanning electron micrograph combined with dispersive spectrometry to analyse a crystal of calcium phosphate on the surface of cartilage in a knee joint of a patient with chondrocalcinosis. Spectrometry shows the concentration of calcium along a horizontal line; a peak is observed when the line crosses the crystal indicating a high calcium concentration. The accumulation of calcium phosphate crystals in joint cartilage causes inflammation, swelling, reduced articulation & may lead to the destruction of the joint. The disease is also known as pseudogout for its resemblance to gout. Magnification X750 (at 13x13cm size) | |
