Mongolian blue spot. Blue patches on a baby's but- tocks. This birthmark (naevus),called Mongolian blue spot,is often mistaken for a bruise. The blue marks appear in patches of skin containing unusually high numbers of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes),and mostly occur around the lower back or buttocks. Mongolian blue spot affects about 80% of black or Asian babies, but only 10% of white babies. The birthmark is harmless and disappears by age 3-5 | |
