MODEL RELEASED. Motor neurone disease. Swollen forearm of a 45- year-old man with motor neurone disease. The swelling,a pitted oedema,is due to a build-up of fluids in the tissues of the arm. It is caused by poor circulation due to inactivity. The fluid can be dispersed and prevented by massage and gentle exercise and elevating the hand. Motor neurone disease is a progressive degeneration of the motor neurones of the brain and spinal cord, along which the brain sends its nerve impulses. It leads to weakening and wastage of muscles. Eventually it is fatal. Motor neurone disease is most common in those aged between 50 and 70,with a slightly higher incidence in men | |
