Abnormal bone growth. Light micrograph of a section through muscle affected by abnormal bone formation (myositis ossificans). The blue layered muscle contains white nodules of bone. Myositis (or fibrodysplasia) ossificans occurs in two forms. It can occur as an inherited disorder (myositis ossificans progressiva). This is an incurable progressive condition. It may also occur as the result of injury (such as sports injury or stab wounds),or without apparent cause (both are termed myositis ossificans circumscripta). In this case, treatment is to immobilize the affected area. The bony lesion may heal,or require surgical removal. Magnification unknown | |
