Meningitis. View of the underside of a human brain affected by a meningitis infection. The underside of the brain stem is seen (at lower centre). Behind this is the cerebellum, part of the hind brain with the rear-end of the cerebrum visible behind. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that cover and protect the brain and the vertebral tract. This is seen here as a creamy discolouration at upper centre. Meningitis is caused by either bacterial or viral infection. Viral meningitis is mild and requires almost no treatment, whereas bacterial meningitis is very dangerous and is usually treated with antibiotics | |
