Migraine. Coloured Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scan of a patient's brain during a migraine attack. It is a horizontal scan through the brain. Colour-coding is: high brain activity (yellow, red); low activity (grey, blue). At lower left is an area (grey) of reduced blood flow and lowered brain activity during migraine. Migraine (severe headache) typically affects one side of the head, and can cause nausea and vomiting. Different brain regions may be involved. However, pain of a migraine does not come from the brain but from the scalp and membranes around the brain. (See: photo P332/234 of a healthy brain) | |
