Lyell's skin disease. Blistering of skin on the back of a patient with Lyell's disease. This is an infection with Staphylococcus bacteria that causes a reaction,resulting in what looks like scalded skin,giving the disease its other name: scalded skin syndrome. The bacteria produce a toxin in the skin,resulting in extensive skin erythema (reddening) and blistering. The upper skin layers are shed. Recovery can be speeded with the use of antibiotic drugs.
