Lyme disease erythema. View of red skin rash (erythema chronicum migrans) on the shoulder and chest of a young girl. The erythema is a symptom of Lyme disease, which is caused by an infection with the spirochetes bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by tick bite. About 3-20 days after the tick bite a rash appears, accompanied by fever, headache & muscle pains. This is followed by joint inflammation (arthritis) with redness & swelling affecting the joints. If diagnosed before the arthritis, the disease can be eradicat- ed with penicillin (antibiotic drug). If the disease is more advanced,non-steroidal anti-infl- ammatory drugs & corticosteroid drugs are used | |
