| Phlebitis. Coloured venogram (X-ray) showing the inflammation of veins (known as phlebitis) in the leg of a patient. The veins have been coloured yellow and appear misshapen,leading off randomly (such as at left of image). Phlebitis causes pain,swelling and tenderness along the length of a vein. The condition often occurs as a complication of varicose veins,where blood pools in the vein due to faulty valves. Phlebitis can lead to abnormal formation of clots in the veins (thrombophlebitis). This is confirmed by venography,when an X-ray is taken after prior injection of a radio-opaque dye into the vein. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs | |
