Deep vein thrombosis. Back view of the lower legs of a 75 year-old woman affected by Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). The affected leg (at left) is noticeably swollen and red. DVT is the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) within deep lying veins,usually in the legs. It is generally triggered by a combination of slow-moving blood flow and some condition which increases the natural tendency of blood to clot. Symptoms include pain,tenderness,swelling,redness and sometimes ulceration of the skin in the area affected. Clots may also break off and be carried to the lungs,blocking arteries and causing a serious condition known as pulmonary embolism
