Foot affected by ischaemia. Ischaemia arises as a result of an insufficient supply of blood to a specific organ or tissue. It is usually caused by a disease of the blood vessels such as atherosclerosis, the narrowing of arteries due to deposits of fat. It may also result from an injury to a vessel or an inadequate blood flow due to inefficient pumping of the heart. Ischemic limbs are usually painful and pulseless. Treatments may include the use of vasodilator drugs or in more severe cases angioplasty (surgical widening of constricted blood vessels) or bypass operation | |
