MODEL RELEASED. Gangrenous leg. Gangrene (localised tissue death, black) resulting from an ulcer on the leg of a 77 year old woman with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). An ulcer is an open sore that does not heal and may turn necrotic,as seen here. PVD is a condition resulting from obstructed peripheral arteries, caused by underlying conditions such as atherosclerosis, stenosis,an embolism or a thrombus. PVD results in ischaemia (restricted blood supply),ulceration and gangrene. This gangrene was so bad that it required leg amputation. For the same patient's toes, see image M165/363 | |
