Cholesteatoma visible through a perforated eardrum. View along the external ear canal showing a large cholesteatoma,a matted collection of skin cells & other debris,often including cholesterol crystals. The pressure from the growing cholesteatoma has resulted in a small perforation of the eardrum,the tympanic membrane. Part of the white mass is visible through the small perforation in the grey,glassy eardrum. Surgery is always necessary to repair an eardrum perforated by a cholesteatoma
