Otitis media. View along the external ear canal in chronic secretory otitis media,a peristent infection of the middle ear. The eardrum (tympanic membrane, the central bulge) appears dull and retracted with a few radial blood vessels on its surface. Otitis media occurs most often in children, with symptoms of earache & sometimes a bloody discharge. A build-up of pus may cause the eardrum to bulge & eventually perforate, resulting in slight deafness. The first line of treatment is with pain-killing drugs & antibiotics. Chronic pesistent cases may need a myringotomy,an operation to drain off the pus | |
