Irritated macula. Ophthalmoscope view of the retinas of a patient with an irritated macula of the left eye (left). The right eye is normal. The macula is the dark spot at lower centre, the irritated area is lighter. The macula is responsible for central vision, and has a high concentration of cone photoreceptor cells, the cells that are specialised for acuity (sharpness) of vision. This condition has caused the patient discomfort whilst reading. It is thought to be caused by stress and should resolve itself within a few weeks. On the outer edges of both eyes are the optic discs, also known as the blind spots, the points at which all the nerve fibres and blood vessels enter the eye | |
