Irritated macula. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of a patient with an irritated macula. The macula is the dark spot at lower centre, the irritated area is lighter. The macula is responsible for central vision, and has a high concentration of cone photoreceptor cells, the cells that are specialised for acuity (sharpness) of vision. This condition has caused the patient discomfort whilst reading. It is thought to be caused by stress and should resolve itself within a few weeks. At left is the optic disc, also known as the blind spot, the point at which all the nerve fibres and blood vessels enter the eye | |
