Meibomian abscess. Close up of a 40-year-old male patient's eye showing an abscess and swelling on the upper eyelid due to a meibomian cyst. The cyst (also known as chalazion) was caused by obstruction of one of the secretory (meibomian) glands which lubricate the eyelids. Here, the cyst has become infected causing an abscess to form (at centre, yellow). Abscesses are collections of pus formed from destroyed tissue and dead infection-fighting white blood cells. The skin around the abscess has become red, inflamed and tender. Large meibomian cysts such as this are usually surgically removed. Antibiotics may also be given in infected cases such as is seen here | |
