Retinal Tear. Ophthalmoscope view of a torn retina in the eye of a patient. The retina is usually a uniform orange colour with red blood vessels. Here,a tear in the retina has caused dark patches of degenerating cells across the retina, with tears seen at centre, upper left & right. The retina is the light sensitive inner layer at the back of the eye. A split in this is usually the result of degeneration and seen more commonly in people with severe myopia (shortsightedness). Tears can also develop due to severe injury to the eye. In most cases a retinal tear will be followed by complete retinal detachment; this is prevented and treated by laser surgery | |
