Ectropion. Close-up of the eye of an elderly patient showing ectropion of the lower eyelid. This is a condition in which the eyelid turns away from the eye. One effect is that the eye becomes constantly watery. The most common type is senile ectropion (seen here),in which the droop of the eyelid is due to loss of tissue elasticity in old age and weakness in the muscles surrounding the eye. The condition may also occur if the conjunctiva (membrane lining the eyelid) becomes thickened or if scarring causes contraction of the skin. Treatment may include minor surgery to tighten the lid with a "tuck" | |
