SRNVM macula degeneration. Ophthalmoscope view of the retina of a patient's eye, showing sub-retinal neovascular membrane (SRNVM) macula degeneration. At centre right is a small discoloured red area covering the macula, part of the retina involved in acuity of vision. Discolouration is due to blood vessels in the choroid layer beneath the retina affecting retinal tissue. Growing or multi- plying blood vessels (neovascularization) may detach the retina causing blindness. The affected macula can lead to loss of central vision. SRNVM macula degeneration can occur spontaneously,in diabetes,or the elderly. Laser treatment is usually successful leading to restored vision | |
