Allergic conjunctivitis. Close-up of a patient's eye showing allergic conjunctivitis and conjuncti- val oedema. The white of the eye is bloodshot and,in the lower right of the eye,is distorted due to build up of fluid (oedema) under the conjunctiva (the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye). These symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction of the conjunc- tiva to a foreign substance. Allergic conjunctiv- itis is common and can be triggered by make-up,contact lens solution or pollen. Treatment includes avoiding the cause, and antihistamine eyedrops to relieve the symptoms | |
