Close-up of the eye showing its changed appearance following a trabeculectomy,an operation to control glaucoma,a condition caused by raised pressure within the eye. The operation is performed after drug control has proved ineffective. Trabeculectomy involves creating an alternative outlet for aqueous humour from the anterior chamber of the eye. This is done by removing a small rectangle of tissue from the sclera (the white of the eye) at its junction with the cornea. This artificial outlet serves to correct the balance between the rate of secretion of aqueous humour & its rate of outflow | |
