Eczema and shingles. Neck of a patient with acute eczema skin inflammation, and a herpes zoster rash (brownish blisters). The eczema appears as pink blotches. Eczema is a general term for an inflammatory dermatitis of the skin which has no obvious external cause. Here, the eczema is com- plicated by the shingles (also known as Herpes zoster). Herpes zoster is due to the varicella- zoster virus,a cause also of chickenpox. Low resistance in a patient allows the virus to flare up in the sensory nerves and cause an extremely painful blistering rash, which here has scabbed over. Corticosteroid drugs, used to treat eczema, can encourage an attack of shingles | |
