Reddening of an infant's hands due to eczema caused by an allergenic reaction to cow's milk. One theory holds that breast feeding conveys a significant degree of protection against eczema in young infants. This is based on an assumption that exposure to foreign food antigens in infancy, when a state of immune vulnerability exists, may result in allergic sensitization and the subsequent development eczema. Eczema is a general term for an inflammatory dermatitis of the skin that has no obvious external cause (as opposed to "contact" or "industrial" dermatitis) and is sometimes called endogenous or constitutional eczema | |
