Salivary gland tumour. Coloured axial (horizontal) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the head of a patient with a large tumour (orange, upper right) of the left parotid salivary gland. There are three sets of paired salivary glands, with the largest, the parotid salivary glands, lying at the back of the jaws, just in front of the ears. Teeth (black, top centre) in the mouth, and the base of the brain (centre) are also seen. Tumours of gland tissue are termed adenomas. Histological study may reveal this tumour as malignant, when it would be termed an adenocarcinoma (cancerous gland tumour). Treatment would involve surgical excision and then some combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy | |
