Lung cancer. Coloured three-dimensional Computed Tomography scan (CT scan) of a patient with a cancerous tumour (yellow) in a lung. Normal lung tissue is blue whilst major air passages are red. The green rod is a "virtual endoscope" which allows a doctor to travel through and view the CT data closely to plan surgery. Lung cancer is one of the most common and dangerous forms of cancer. The main causes include cigarette smoking, air pollution and the spread of cancer cells from elsewhere in the body. Treatment includes surgical removal,anti-cancer drugs and radiotherapy. CT scans use thin beams of X-rays to produce images of the body which are combined by a computer | |
