Brain tumour. Three-dimensional contour map of a patient's head in front view, showing a brain tumour (green). This virtual reality image is used for computer-aided brain surgery. The red line shows a surgical route to the tumour. In computer- aided brain surgery many MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans are taken of the brain. These are programmed into a powerful MKM stereotaxic micro- scope which plots the position of the tumour, then maps it in 3-D virtual reality. The surgeon looks into the microscope and is guided where to cut and how to avoid delicate brain tissue. When the tumour is reached it is destroyed by a laser on the microscope that is operated by a joystick | |
