Cushing's syndrome. Light micrograph of a section through a human adrenal gland tumour, the cause of Cushing's syndrome. The tumour is a malignant (cancerous) adenocarcinoma, which causes the adrenal gland to over-produce corticosteroid hormones. These hormones, also known as corticoid, regulate the salt & water balance in the body and utilize fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include weight gain,a moon- faced appearance, excess body and facial hair (especially in women) and mental disturbances. Treatment requires removal of the adrenal gland (adrenalectomy),followed by hormone replacement drugs. Magnification unknown | |
