Leukaemic white blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of abnormal human lymphoblasts (immature white blood cells) from the bone marrow of a patient with lymphoblastic leukaemia. The small projections on the surface of each cell are microvilli,which help lymphoblasts to attach to other cells. These diseased cells have abnormally few,small microvilli. Lymphoblastic leukaemia is a type of cancer that causes uncontrolled production of abnormal,immature blood cells by the bone marrow. It is often fatal but can be cured if diagnosed early. Treatment includes chemotherapy,radiotherapy and bone marrow transplants. Magnification unknown
