| Secondary bone cancer. Gross specimen of a spine with a metastatic (secondary) malignant (cancerous) tumour. This is an osteoblastic (bone- building) tumour,the bone tissue is more dense than normal. The cancer has spread from a primary cancer of the breast. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. Spread of breast cancer to the spine occurs in 25% of cases. It causes great pain and the bones have a tendency to fracture.
