Rectal cancer. Gross specimen of an adenocarcinoma (growth, centre left) in tissue from the rectum, the last part of the digestive tract that follows the colon (large intestine). An adenocarcinoma is a cancer of the glandular linings that are found in many different organs, including the digestive tract. Because a rectal cancer is similar to colon cancer,it is often named colorectal cancer. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in North America and Western Europe. It is thought to be connected to following a diet high in fat and low in fibre. The cancerous bit of the colon or rectum is surgically removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy if the cancer has spread | |
