Normal thymus tissue is seen at lower frame; the tumour occupies almost half the gland (at top,light brown) and appears glandular. The thymus gland is located in the upper chest it reaches its largest size in children,playing an important role in the immune system. A thymoma is rare,and the tumour may be slow growing or benign. A tumour of the size seen here may affect the function of the thymus and thus the function of the immune system,with sufferers at increased risk of infection.
