Ulcerative colitis. Artwork of the intestines showing inflammation of their linings caused by ulcerative colitis (UC). An area of ulceration is highlighted in the circle at lower right. The cause of UC is unknown. It leads to diarrhoea, abdominal pain and blood loss, and may require surgical removal of the affected part of the intestines. Corticosteroid drugs are sometimes given to reduce the inflammation. At centre left, the inflamed lining of the small intestine is highlighted in a circle. This may be due to Crohn's disease, which often occurs in the small intestine near its junction with the large intestine. Symptoms are similar to those of UC | |
